[For the moment, Enjolras has opted, as much as possible, for calm, given the situation. It is not ideal, perhaps, but there IS a part of him that hopes that if this cannot be gotten out of by any other means which will ensure dignity for the cause, that it comes to a trial. They'll let him speak if there is a trial, and THAT could come to something useful.

That said, of all the people to end up here waiting with, Grantaire is...surely not whom he would have chosen, and he's certainly not doing much to help Enjolras to STAY focused on that potential future outcome where he's allowed to blast a tribunal with rhetoric, or on how one survives this in the meantime.]

This IS less than ideal a situation. [He'll concede to that point at least] but we are not so hopeless as all that. There are, of course, still some things we might do. We are not nearly finished here.

[And then he's glancing at Grantaire, a small, but not amused, smile, crossing his lips.]

...This must be an interesting moment for you. Dire predictions coming true.

[ Some relief seems to come to Grantaire's posture at the fact that Enjolras does indeed have plans, or at the least ideas. Death can be fine, certainly, but being held in captivity is merely insulting. He doubts they will give him anything to drink. ]

My predictions were far more dire, for you at least. You live and I am here, I did not expect that. For how long this will be the case, I cannot be sure, so give me your ideas and I will tell you which is the least hopeless. This must be a rush for you, I know you are currently swept away in idealism from this confinement; it is lucky I am here with you.

[Plans entail, well, having access to the others, to plan with, which entails them staying well out of being caught themselves. That said, ideas are forming, even though he hesitates before answering Grantaire's request for ideas.]

Your feelings toward our cause are not likely to be improved by my thoughts now. [Why Enjolras finds himself admitting this, he is not certain, but there it is, regardless.] Still. It would seem we can use this setback as a means of advocating for the republic. There will, of course, be a trial.

[And here, something in Enjolras's gaze shifts a little, and it seems as if he's looking past Grantaire and toward some distant light instead. A rush? yes, that IS one way to put it. ]

Swept away, do you suppose? [And there's a frown crossing his face, more thoughtful than not. ] Enough so that I place everything else in danger? Would you have me pull it back, perhaps? Return to the ground instead of flight? You, of anyone, might drag me back down there, of course.

[It is only a thought, not intended to cut, and slips out without Enjolras realizing precisely what he has said at first. He meant to imply Grantaire's decency as a grounding source for him instead of what came out. ]

[ Grantaire cannot help an exasperated sigh. Of course Enjolras only plans for the future of the Republic and nothing else. Grantaire has very little desire to advocate for anything; he would much rather leave this confinement. Perhaps there is a way their wishes can intertwine, should that possibility ever be found. ]

What trial could they hold? We have committed treason. They can shoot us dead as soon as they would like and say they did it for the safety of the kingdom! Do you plan to rot in wait for a trial that will never come?

[ Grantaire glances to him in uncertainty. He is not entirely sure what the intent behind that statement is, though it is merely wrong; he prefers to watch Enjolras soar. ] I have no desire to see you grounded, I assure you. To take away your flight would be to cut off a bird's wings and I am not so cruel a man. Fly as you like away from this prison and I will watch you from where I sit.

[It is not that Enjolras plans only for the republic, but rather that...in light of their current situation, there is not much point in planning for himself, now is there? Confinement for Grantaire is not ideal, of course, considering the man has never seemed to regard the fight as his before. Does it stand that way now, still or has this pushed the other man into new territory? Enjolras is not sure himself, and, at the sigh, returns the other's gaze.]

They will hold a trial, Grantaire. Make us into an example. They may have no legal requirement to do so, but the strategy of parading us before a jury, then a public execution would encourage others to stay silent, would it not? That is what they seem to want.

[And that statement was...he's sighing now at Grantaire's answer.]

I do not mean that you...drag is the wrong word perhaps. You would pull me to earth instead, to the realities. Much as I may have hated to face the things that I acknowledged were a possibility, they are here now, and I will...need a force to keep me rooted in reality. Not your usual task, I know, but you are suited to it and are here.

[ Grantaire only looks tired at the way Enjolras describes their likely future. He would much rather get dying out of the way than be dragged about by soldiers. But then, he is with Enjolras and perhaps it is better to allow Enjolras his time at trial. He thinks idly that they might find an escape, but it has never been in Enjolras's plan to live; he knows that much. ]

You trust me over yourself? You should know that I do not merely stand upon earth, no, I am lower. I am deep within Cocytus, where traitors wail for their own sins. [ He pauses and glances to Enjolras. ] It possible, then, that we might meet on earth. I will pull you down and you will take me up and we will find each other on common ground. Is that acceptable to you?
